Vs Ulsan Hyundai (away) 14/9/21, ACL Round of 16

Ulsan Hyundai 0 - 0 Kawasaki Frontale (AET) (3-2 on penalties)

Down to two competitions! Out of both the Levain and the ACL within 10 days, (don’t forget that the ACL is our main target for this year…). What a time to be alive! To be honest though, we can probably be fairly pleased with how we did in both competitions due to this massive injury crisis that just keeps on giving. The world may be under the impression that the most highly contagious disease that is going round right now is Corona virus, but I think we have a case for saying it is Frontale centre back injury disease instead. Out of the four ‘centre backs’ we use all four have now been injured in the last month. Jesiel managed to come back after only missing one game but I’m sure 120 minutes won’t have done him much good. We’ve had the fun experience of another midfielder getting a go at centre back in this game, so add Tsukagawa to the list of players who is now susceptible to the defender injury pandemic. I really don’t know what I can write about this game as it was pretty dire. People always talk about games being a real advert for the competition. This was more like a public information film warning against the dangers of following or watching football. Any kids watching will now have surely been mentally scarred by 120 minutes of tedium followed by a competition where 5 members of both teams basically attempted not to fall down a hole whilst kicking a ball.

Before the game I was wondering if we were being a bit sneaky with our social media posts and who was pictured in them, hoping that we might have a pleasant surprise when the starting line up was announced. But no, everyone is still injured and pretty much everyone who was pictured and was eligible to play was on the bench. We even had two spare goalkeepers. Can never be too careful I guess. I guess the only thing of interest in the line up (aside from the centre backs, which wasn’t that interesting as it was the only two vaguely fit ones that played) was a front three of Ienaga on the right, Damiao in the middle and Kobayashi on the left. Apparently this was with the intention that we could switch to a 4-4-2 if we needed to. Whether we did or not, I don’t know, because all we basically did was give away the ball in midfield or hoof the ball up the pitch (giving it away). Ienaga always seems to go where he wants so it’s difficult to work out what the actual shape was. I have to say, halfway through the game I began to doubt even the limited tactical knowledge I have on football. I couldn’t decide whether it was an awesome tactical battle with both teams’ constant thrilling innovations being parried by the opposition or whether it was just one of the worst games of football in the world ever. Judging by Twitter, the prevailing opinion seems to be the latter. Four shots on target in total. Two each. For us that accounted for 16% of all our shots. For them it was 12%. So at least we won in that respect. We can take the moral high ground and claim that our beautiful high quality attacking play deserved more. Or maybe not. I think it was pretty significant that we made no subs for 86 minutes and then only made one change. For the last 25 minutes of the 90 we had plenty of players who could barely walk, let alone run and play football. But Oniki didn’t change anything, I guess because he didn’t think he could make any improvements. Or he didn’t know what to do. Or he didn’t trust the players he had on the bench (which is something of a problem as I can’t see many of the starting eleven being good for a game on Saturday away in Tokushima. Not sure if they will have to quarantine again). Or probably it was a bit of all three options. Or a lot of all three options. This is all skirting around the issue which is that basically, WE’RE FUCKED! (pardon my language). On Twitter it was said that this was a bad result for YFM as we’d now be able to concentrate on the league. This is kind of true, but you’ve got to think that going to extra time with a squad that is already close to breaking isn’t going to help us in these upcoming games that we have. From Saturday we have four games in 12 days. I would guess that we’ll see some unfamiliar faces on Saturday, but I would also guess that Oniki won’t change much as he never really does and he can’t really change much at the moment. It’s useful that I have covered all bases with those predictions. So, the injury and tiredness situation isn’t good. How about the morale situation? Hmmmm, maybe not great either… That’s only 2 wins in the last 8 games. So yeah… we’re fucked.

A few words about our opponents and an attempt at a few jokes. When looking at the massive empty stand with UH FC on it, I cam to understand the ‘uh’ quite quickly, it being the sound that came out of my mouth most often in this game. I’ll leave it to your imagination what the FC might stand for. This is all just a joke though as I don’t have any malice for Ulsan. Certainly they are much better at the dark arts that I think we are. There were quite a few tasty challenges and a fair bit of rolling around on the floor. The two things that really hurt about this defeat were: 1 - we lost in a penalty shoot out to a keeper who looks like he’s been down the Ulsan equivalent of Camden and got himself a few mini dreads and a bit of a perm and dye where his bowl cut used to be. I feel that it gave him an unfair advantage when it came to saving penalties. 2 - It also hurt that we weren’t able to go and at least get some travel enjoyment out of another horrible ACL exit. Instead we were sitting at home watching another rotten game on DAZN and they even amped up the rottenness by piping some ‘mild excitement’ crowd noise in to the stadium to really build the ambience. The fact that you could hear the managers shouting over it suggests that maybe it wasn’t actually that loud, and was perhaps even more pointless than we might have first thought. One weird thing was the fact the for the first time (I think) I saw someone get in the way of the main camera in the stand at the side of the pitch. You expect this on a high energy morning magazine type TV show perhaps but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it at a football game. This was particularly bizarre when you consider that there was hardly anyone in the stadium. I do feel some empathy though for the guy who had the whole stadium to stand in and ended up standing in front of the camera. Bit embarrassing. I guess contractually, I should also be a little angry about something, so let’s moan about the horrific penalty spot. Clearly Hasegawa’s Gareth Southgate-esque penalty (still rising as we speak. Pizza Hut advert on the way perhaps. All a bit niche those references…) was affected by the pitch giving way beneath him as he went to kick it. Not sure we can say the same about the other misses. And it affects both teams the same anyway. I was a bit miffed by the linesman saying Sung-Ryong was off the line for a save, the penalty having to be re-taken, only for it to be saved again, and then apparently not bothering to apply the same rule for the very next penalty by us, (which admittedly we put way over the bar, but it would have been nice to have had another go). Perhaps he felt his job was done. But yeah, I’m clutching at straws. There’s no way you could really say we deserved to go through and I can’t help but feel it would have been better if we just had to forfeit the game. We wouldn’t have had to bother with all the extra effort, travel, possible covid exposure, disappointment, general shitness and without all of these we would have probably been in a better place for the rest of the season. But I kind of expected this. The seeds were sown when Mitoma and Tanaka left and weren’t replaced, were watered by a massive amount of games and nurtured by a ridiculous run of injuries. We can lament the injury situation, moan about winning the group with a perfect record and still getting drawn away to the one other team with a perfect record, the horrible penalty spot and probably plenty of other things but you know, two shots on target in 120 minutes probably tells the story and surprisingly it wasn’t to do with any defensive frailties. If we manage to come out of this year with any title it will be a blessing as right now we look pretty out of sorts and like we’re about to collapse. Uh…. FC.

That’ll do. I wrote more than I thought I would given how terrible the game was. Next up, another horrible watch on DAZN. Tokushima away was the game I was most looking forward to this year but we’ve been denied it. Like we have been denied most of the good away trips (please, please, please let us be able to go to Tosu…). Corona football is a pretty disheartening thing. Of course Corona itself is much, much worse! But to be honest, I’m starting to think I will enjoy the games I can’t attend much more if I don’t actually watch them on DAZN and instead listen to the sound of the electro magnetic waves the computer is making instead. But this probably says more about my music taste than anything useful so let’s leave it here. Go (get some rest and at least a little bit of mojo back please) Frontale.

Vs Beijing Guoan 11/7/21 ACL Group stage game 6

Kawasaki Frontale 4 - 0 Beijing Guoan

Well the group stage is over. And to be honest it’s come at the right time as I am getting a bit fed up with writing blog posts on games I’ve watched online. And a bit fed up with the world surrounding football to be honest. Seeing some of the horrendous online and out of the stadium stuff that went on around the Euro 2020 final it’s probably natural to feel a bit of distaste with all things football right now. Honestly, it has made me despair. Not for any reasons connected to what happened on the pitch but with plenty of things that surround the game and also run through society. It seems slightly unfair to even associate an ACL game in an empty stadium with these matters as effectively the only thing they have in common is the sport that’s being played on the pitch. But at the same time, it’s hard to write anything connected to football today without mentioning the absolute disgust I have for online and offline racist abuse, and the fighting and smashing stuff up in the streets. I don’t think it’s strictly a football problem. But obviously football seems to draw idiots like moths to a flame. The only problem is that they don’t get burnt up and perish, but instead continue to sling their ignorance around the internet and in person out in society too. I guess the fact is that in daily life we are surrounded by people with nasty thoughts and tiny narrow minds who feel that a football game is a good opportunity to spout the shabby contents of their poison-filled peanut brain, most of which has been planted there by Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and the majority of the Conservative party and other right wing politicians. Guess there must be some money to be made in pushing racism as that normally seems to be the only thing that motivates them. Obviously not everyone who supports England or any football team is part of this idiotic group. However everyone is affected by it. And the fact is that even if it is a tiny minority of football fans who are racist idiots and/or thugs, there is a significant number of racist idiots and/or thugs in society who see football as a good way of spouting their toxic small mindedness. I have no idea how, or even if, it can be done, but we need to eliminate this from the game and eliminate this from society. I fear that while we have politicians in power fostering a political climate that thinks it is ok to mock and demonise the less fortunate, the different, the marginalised, the best possible outcome could be that it is just driven underground to fester rather than be eliminated. Which isn’t exactly a good outcome. Anyway, the last thing you need to hear in this post is me moaning about racist idiocy in England as there are thankfully no shortage of people doing it much more eloquently at the moment so I’ll get on with the post and get it out of the way as quickly as possible.

We’re through with a perfect record and have been rewarded with a one leg away tie against last year’s champions who also finished the group stages with a perfect record. Seems a bit of a rough draw and perhaps suggested that we shouldn’t have tried so hard. Any competition where to understand the draw you need a table of possible and impossible options seems like it might perhaps be a bit overcomplicated. But the fact that there were five groups and four games in the next round makes it inevitable that two group winners will have to play each other. If you want to win the competition you have to beat the best teams though, so I suppose in that respect it doesn’t really matter if you play the defending champions in the first knockout round or the final but it’s a bit disappointing to not have even got a home draw.

This was quite an exciting game as far as I can remember. The big changes in the starting line up were enough to get me quite enthusiastic about this match. First starts for Kamiya and Miyagi, and first pitch time for Tanabe from the bench. Kamiya had a go at left back and at centre back and looked pretty good in both spots I thought. I must admit that there are three factors which might be skewing this slightly. Namely, first that I had consumed a few beers before the game, second, that I’m biased towards Kamiya as I have his towel, and thirdly, that perhaps the opposition weren’t up to much. I also thought Kozuka looked pretty good in midfield and his two goals and general performance would have been a good confidence boost for him as he’s so far had a few wobbly performances at the start of his Frontale career. Zain also had a good game I thought and looked a real danger going forward. I was surprised to see Tanabe at left back rather than centre back, but I guess Oniki gave Kamiya his first taste of the action in a similar way, perhaps feeling that there is less pressure there than in the middle. I had no idea both players were quite so attacking though. But I guess that makes sense as most of the players we seem to sign are. Miyagi marked his first start with his first goal and was pretty bright I thought. I’m hoping some of Mitoma’s magic will have rubbed off on him. In recent years we’ve been absolutely overflowing with attacking left sided players but now we seem to only have Hasegawa whose can count that as his preferred position. Miyagi played this game on the right, but his previous appearance was on the left so I guess he will be providing back up for both spots. I guess Hatate can play on the left too. I wonder if we will spend any of the money we have got for Mitoma on any kind of reinforcements. I’m inclined to say we don’t particularly need to, but it only takes a couple of injuries and things could start looking a bit shaky. It’s unfortunate to lose two of your best players within a few weeks of each other but I guess we knew it was going to happen, so hopefully Oniki has something planned.

Few stupid observations to round this off. Not only do the 1 and 7 look the same in the ACL kit font but also the 5 and 6 do. I’d suggest that if four out of the ten digits are easily confused it might suggest that the font is a failure. It was nice to finally see the Lokomotiv stadium in daylight. They seemed to have changed the camera angle slightly though as I remember in previous games being enthralled by the fact that the different areas of the stadium had SEKTOR __ emblazoned on them. There’s something slightly intoxicating about a word spelt slightly different from the English version, particularly if it has been Eastern European/Eurasian-ed up with a K where you’d expect a C. Guess the same applies to the stadium name. Kan you get the KonZept that I’m trying to Kreate as a piKtur in your Kranium? Hmmmmm….. Oh, and it was nice to see Chinen score again, particularly given that he made the assist too by passing the ball to himself via both posts before he put it away. Skill shot!

Next up Shimizu away which is something of a blessing as it’s probably one of the closer away games we could have got to follow up our central Asian odyssey. Tanaka’s gone, Mitoma’s gone. Hatate will probably be with the Olympic team. Kobayashi is injured. And we’ll probably be running on fumes after a busy schedule on the pitch and on airplanes. YFM have sadly not slipped up in any of their games they’ve had to make up so the gap has been cut a bit. There’s not really any reason why we should be worried… yet. A dodgy game or two could soon change that feeling though, so hopefully we’ll be back and firing this weekend. It’s always a fun away trip and thankfully we haven’t been denied it in what is another weird Corona ravaged season. Go Frontale!

Vs Daegu FC 8/7/21 ACL Group stage game 5

Daegu FC 1 - 3 Kawasaki Frontale

We’re almost there! 5 games done out of 6 and we’ve got a perfect record so far. With these late night ACL kick offs and the Euros being on at the same time, it is fair to say that my sleep patterns are a bit disrupted recently so I’ll be quite pleased come Monday morning when both the Euros and our ACL group stage are finished. Sunday night/Monday morning is a double header with a bit of sleeping time in between but to be honest I’ve never been great at sleeping on demand when I really need to, so I am slightly worried about working on Monday. Anyway, you’re not interested in my sleep issues so I’ll get on with wrapping this post up in my usual half-arsed didn’t attend the game ACL style.

We were back to the first eleven (kind of) for this crucial game. It seems unlikely that Beijing Guoan who have one point from five games so far will take anything from us in the final game so we could be looking at a perfect record. But I guess we’ll ring that changes for that game and give some of the less used players a run out. Maybe Oniki will even change the keeper. Kobayashi is still injured and it seems that Tsukagawa has joined that list, although his absence might be just a precaution after picking up a head injury. Nobori didn’t play this game which I guess is because he wasn’t being risked after picking up an injury in a previous game. There’s not a great deal else to say personnel wise about this match. Joao Schmidt picked up a yellow which means he misses the next game, which presumably he wouldn’t have played anyway, so this suggests that it was quite a sensible yellow card to pick up. I don’t know if yellow card records are expunged after the group stage but my guess is that they aren’t. Perhaps the big shock in this match was Schmidt’s replacement Yamamura. Having Yamamura, Jesiel ,Kurumaya, and Taniguchi on the pitch at the same time really hints at Taniguchi in the anchor role in midfield but perhaps after he finally had a decent spell there in the last match, Oniki went with the midfielder Yamamura in midfield. Very surprising! And makes the Taniguchi in midfield experiments even more confusing. Basically we kept relentlessly trying it till it eventually worked and when it finally did we’ve given up with it. I would rather he didn’t play there but it’s weird that Oniki has given up on the idea now. Or perhaps he is still looking at these games as opportunities to try things out, which is pretty adventurous as he doesn’t even try to do these kind of things in games against the lowliest of J League opposition. Although I guess playing Yamamura in midfield is not so much of an experiment historically, it just feels like it is given how often it has been done since he joined us. A quick word on Damiao who picked up a hat trick in this game. Weird that against ‘weaker’ opposition he was only able to score once and then he bags a crucial hat trick in our tough game. Six goals for him in the ACL so far so it’s not only Tachibanda that Olunga needs to be keeping a golden boot eye on. Nice work Damiao! He’s been in a position to get a hat trick before but I don’t think he has quite got there. Oniki does tend to usually make more changes than he has been doing in these games and more often than not Damiao would be withdrawn before being able to get his third.

A quick word on Daegu. I feel quite sorry for their keeper who kept them in the game. We had significantly more possession and shots than them in this match and it seems a shame for him that he ended up conceding three times. (Also, I quite liked the design of his shirt). However maybe we needed him to do this, as we did let in a really soft goal with Taniguchi and Schmidt tackling each other and basically letting the ball drop to their striker to put it away from close range. Previous to that goal, our first came from similarly calamitous defending. And actually so did our second. It wasn’t a great night for defences I guess. Pleasingly our third was a nice move though. There were maybe a couple of contributing factors to the general sloppiness though which I’ll mention later. Daegu were a pretty physical team again and honestly it was a bit of a joke that it took the ref so long to book their number 30 who was basically fouling every attack we made. When he finally did get booked it looked like he was feigning injury to avoid a yellow but it seemed that due to all that hacking he had actually pulled a muscle and had to be subbed. Which made a change from the pulling of shirts that he’d been doing for most of the game (ho ho ho, what a great bit of wordplay that was). I feel like in both games we have been on top against Daegu and I guess the results show this but they were definitely our toughest group opponents. They do apparently have some important players missing though. To be fair though, so do we. The K League seems quite tight at the moment, and Daegu are four points off the top spot in 4th, so if we get another K League team in the next round I wonder if they will prove to be similarly challenging.

This was far from a classic game. The mitigating factors I mentioned above were probably the heat and the pitch. At kick off it was 37 degrees and this actually was a later than usual kick off. Parts of the game were played at walking pace and given that the first two goals were basically gifts from the two defences two strikers I wondered if it was going to peter out into a pass-a-thon with neither team exerting themselves too much and a mutually beneficial draw being the outcome. I’m never really sure how these things come about though, and perhaps Oniki wanted to make a real statement in the group stage. Let’s be honest though, if, (as it looks like we will), we finish with a perfect record we’ll still be told that we had it easy. Basically there’s no way that we could come out of the group stage untouched by moans. On to the awful pitch. This was our first game in the other bigger stadium. Apparently at the start of the tournament the Lokomotiv stadium pitch was much worse. But if that is still the case I’m not looking forward to seeing it for our last game. It’s a bit of cliche to compare a pitch to an unploughed farmer’s field but the comparison was pretty spot on in this match I think. From a distance it looked a bit dodgy but maybe looked like it had at least been painted green. Close up it looked horrible. Lots of players ended up covered in mud and I guess this came from a lot of pre-match watering to try and soften and hose down some of the solid pitch bumps that apparently were a mini recreation of Uzbekistan’s Hissar range of mountains. Culturally, it was a nice touch to introduce some of the wide range of geographical features of the Uzbek countryside. To make it even clearer that I’m googling a lot for these comparisons, I would also like to say that other areas of the pitch resembled the Kyzylkum desert. Basically, it was a rubbish pitch and I’m pleased that we seemed to come away from the match relatively unscathed injury-wise. One final point is that after 4 games the TV coverage seems to be getting a bit better. Or maybe it was just because we were in the bigger stadium. At one stage it seemed they were doing a kind of fade to blur thing on the introduction of the people walking in with the ACL flag. Or maybe I’m being generous and it was a happy accident. Still the commentators seem to be having some trouble identifying our players but again I’ll give them the excuse that they have the same slightly dodgy pictures to go from. And the fact that the number 7 in the font we use for our ACL shirts looks quite like a number 1. I was confused to see Kobayashi on the pitch in the last match but it turned out to be Kozuka. And although Ienaga and Hatate don’t exactly look that similar, their 41 and 47 certainly do.

Like I said above, we’re almost there. One more game and then we can come back to Japan and to a 4 day 2 match period of games and then a month off. It seems that these games might be our last opportunity to see Mitoma play as he is being strongly linked with a move to Brighton after the Olympics, which personally speaking is horrible for me as I don’t like them much due to rivalries with my team back in England. However I do like the fact the he’ll probably immediately be loaned to St Gilloise in Belgium, (who I do like for unconnected to football reasons), due to work permit issues. Presumably I will never have to opportunity to actually see him play for them whilst drinking beautiful sour beer though given that we are still lurching from one period of feckless corona response to another over here at the moment. Anyway, enough of that and enough of this. Go Frontale!

Vs United City FC 6/7/21 ACL Group stage game 4

United City FC 0 - 2 Kawasaki Frontale

This is a difficult blog post to write. And that’s not because we have recently got used to massive victories in this competition and this failed to live up to those standards. It’s more that I used up all my ‘witty’ observations about United City in the last post. And also because this was a pretty bad game that was quite difficult to concentrate on. Thankfully it was an 11pm kick off rather than a 1am one as that would have really put the cherry on the cake, frustration wise. To be honest I’m going to rush through this post as there’s not much to say. It was a case of job done (in the least exciting fashion possible, which is a bizarre observation considering we had 25 shots, but it just felt like a bit of a borefest), and hopefully was a case of us doing what was necessary and not exerting ourselves to do much more. I’m pleased we managed to get the second goal as until then the game was so one-sided but still at 1-0 that the only possible outcome seemed to be a last minute own goal equaliser disaster.

Both teams changed their starting line ups quite a lot. Again this was a case of us playing the reserves and you could say it showed a bit. I don’t know where their starting 11 ranked on the first team/reserves axis but they did a lot better than the previous line up did. Well, from a results point of view anyway. They still didn’t really offer anything going forward aside from one goalmouth scramble, but they considerably reduced the amount of goals they conceded. The weird thing is that we had more shots in this game than in the 8-0 victory. We also had almost the same amount of shots on target. However, the important stat is that in the 8-0 game 8 out of 15 went in and in this game 2 out of 12 went in. I saw someone on Twitter wondering whether the United City keeper could do a job in the J League. I can only presume they weren’t watching the game. Not dissing him, but definitely the reduced number of shots going in had a lot more to do with our dull finishing than any goal keeping heroics. Heroics is a good word though, as their keeper Pinthus does seem to like an overly dramatic flying save. Well done to him though. He did better than Langerak did in the two games we’ve played against Nagoya so far this year. (Now I’ve said that I bet we’ll get them in the next round and lose…). Much like in the first game between these two teams, United City did a good job of defending and holding out sternly for the first part of the game. Significantly, in this game the collapse never came. Credit to them! Slightly bizarrely, the other group game seemed to go a similar way. Perhaps this is the natural pattern in that both of the ‘weaker’ teams in the group got spanked by the two ‘stronger’ teams in their first encounter and then managed to stem the flow somewhat in the following fixture. When the final group game comes round we’ll see if that applies to the other fixtures that were previously whallopings. In the mean time we have the crucial fixture of the group stage when we face Daegu in the next match. Hopefully we won’t be as generous at the back as we were in the first fixture. And hopefully we won’t be so wasteful up front as we were in this game. I presume the ‘first team’ will be back for that game, although some of them were called on to try to make this game safe about halfway through the second half.

Some final little comments. The foul count in this match ended up pretty even, which is weird considering how one sided it was in the previous two games. I can’t quite make a clear connection between playing well and giving away fouls so that will remain something of a mystery. I’ve noticed that our Forza Frontale flag changes end in the matches depending on whether we are ‘home’ or ‘away’. A nice touch perhaps, or maybe just a slightly obsessively weird request from the Kazoku. A quick mention of the goals. Chinen’s was a nice tidy finish, Hasegawa’s was perhaps one of the sloppiest and least exciting goals ever, being a close range scuff. Even that makes it sound more exciting than it was. Nobori was back but we have potentially another injury now as Tsukagawa had to leave the pitch on a stretcher, perhaps due to a previous head injury. I’m not sure if he went down because he was wobbly a few minutes after the clash of heads or whether the stretcher and substitution were precautions due to the fact that he’d had the clash of heads and his injury was unrelated. Either way, I obviously wish him all the best. It’s the second time he’s had to be substituted due to a head injury in his brief Frontale career which shows he really does like to get stuck in. Oh and finally, credit where credit’s due, and a slap in the face to Einstein, as Taniguchi came on for Tsukagawa in midfield and he actually seemed to do a pretty good job there! The evidence still points to it not being a good idea, but I can’t complain about it on this occasion aside from complaining that it makes my previous comments that he’s terrible there look stupid… unless you look at any of the previous occasions he’s played there. But on this occasion, well done Shogo!

Next up is Daegu at 1am on Friday night. We get to go to the other Tashkent stadium for once. Not the nicest of kick off times for perhaps the most important game of the group stage. And not sure why the more exciting games need to be played at more inconvenient times, but never mind. If we avoid defeat in that game we only need a draw against Beijing Guoan’s kids in the final game to win the group. Go Frontale!

Vs United City FC 2/7/21 ACL Group stage game 3

Kawasaki Frontale 8 - 0 United City FC

Another ACL game ticked off and it was another big win. We’d been building up to an ACL push this year but the reality of these group games so far has been a bit of an anticlimax. Not saying they haven’t been fun to watch as they’ve had plenty of goals in them. Just that it seems that 4 out of our 6 group games will just be us going through the motions. I’ve posted previously about the weird state of the ACL this year so I won’t go over that again. But aside from the other game against Daegu, the most challenging aspect of the next week or so might be the club trying to find original content for Instagram and me trying to find ways to describe very one-sided goalfests. I’m sure both the club and I will do our best though. So here we go.

Initially when I discovered our ACL opposition, I was reminded of that particular kind of football fan who has on their Twitter profile that they are a fan of Arsenal and Tottenham or something like that. It’s definitely something that seems a bit alien to most people who follow football. Presumably the person who changed the name of Ceres Negros to United City FC likes both Manchester United and Manchester City and just couldn’t choose one over the other. Who needs the name of the place when you can just go with two team name endings instead? Although I guess we do have Albion Rovers in the UK so I should probably shut up. I like to think of it being something positive though. A city united through football. Feels much better to look at it like that rather than being snippy about it, doesn’t it? I didn’t know much about them before the game (apart from the fact that FC Tokyo just about managed to squeak past them with a 2-0 win in a game that was mostly subaquatic in last year’s ACL), so I was somewhat surprised how steadily they started the game considering their previous two ACL results. For a lot of the game they were pretty solid at the back. This may have been due to the fact that they were playing a back three with another back four in front of them (according to a website line up I saw). They did a decent job of preventing us breaking through and scoring and played the ball out from the back quite well I thought. Well, up till they reached the middle of the pitch where they hoofed it forward or lost it. I guess when you play with so many players at the back you end up with no-one up the front to get the ball when you’re not defending. One other thing that surprised me was that according to the commentators Shrek was playing for United City. I couldn’t spot him and his green skin probably would have stood out nicely against their golden kit. I’m not going to be too snippy about this either as although Katakana doesn’t exactly help with making foreign pronunciations accurate, in English we tend to just do things our own way and be done with it, particularly with place names. Guess that’s an ex-imperialist thing. The similarities between creature and player don’t go very far. According to a very brief internet search ‘Though surly, dangerous, cynical, misanthropic, and venomously cranky, Shrek is peaceful and does not care to hurt anyone, but just wants to live in solitude and be left alone.’ By contrast a Schröck loves to get involved with every challenge on the pitch and have a moan about it being either definitely not a foul (if he committed it) or definitely a foul (if he lost the ball). So I guess he does share some of the crankiness. Anyway, I’m just trying to make some jokes to make this blog post slightly entertaining and I have no feelings of ill will against him or his team.

Talking of fouls, once again we seemed to give away loads more than we received. 26 to 13 in this game, 25 to 5 in the Beijing game. I don’t think we’re a dirty team so I can only imagine that this imbalance is probably due to us having a lot more of the ball and being able to keep it away from opposition tackles. The ref in this match gave absolutely everything though. No sign of any advantages being given and any 50/50 tackle seemed to be given as a foul. Slightly bizarrely they picked up three time as many yellows as we did though, which I guess shows that if they were going to foul, they really went for it. I thought Joao Schmidt’s yellow was ridiculous in this game, but let’s not moan when we’ve won 8-0. I’m trying to be less annoying recently in this respect. Please let me know if I’m succeeding. However, I can’t help but have a little moan again about the TV director. We had a few replays of a couple of yellow cards being given which was shown at the same time as one of United City’s three shots. I wouldn’t have been too happy if I was a United City fan having missed one third of the positive moments of my team. I should also mention the, (I think), once per game occasion of there being an ACL FACT flashed up on the screen. In this game it was perhaps slightly relevant given that it was about the fact that there have been 13 champions from the East zone in the last 18 years (or something like that…). In the previous game against Beijing Guoan the fact was about Korean teams which kind of seemed to be missing the point slightly. I wonder if they couldn’t come up with that many facts and are therefore having to ration them to one per game and shoehorn them in even when they aren’t particularly pertinent. The coverage does all feel a little bit like it’s been handed to the guys who normally do the darts who’ve been told to have a quick watch of another channels coverage of a different tournament and try to do broadly the same thing on their first attempt with only a couple of days to prepare.

A few brief points about us. It seems like Oniki is basically going with alternate teams for alternate matches. This game we were back with what could probably be described as the first team. Sung-Ryong, Yamane and Hatate are playing every game though. No Nobori or Kobayashi in the squad which suggests that they are both still injured. To what extent, who knows? Hatate added another string to his bow in this game as he spent some time at right back. This was a glorious time when we were playing an attacker at right back, a midfielder in defence (Yamamura) and a defender in midfield (Taniguchi). I don’t particularly want to moan about Taniguchi playing in midfield again, but I feel that I have to do it as it’s pretty stupid I think. As I always say, we have now tried him in the anchor role a crazy amount of times, all with the same outcome. Not sure how accurate the widely spouted 'quote' is, but I believe Einstein said something about the definition of insanity being trying the same thing over and over and expecting the outcome to be different. If we were going to give Taniguchi a go there, this was probably the right game in which to do it. But I’m not sure why we are bothering as he’s always pretty bad there and now he’s playing great at the back, why mess with it? One little final dig about this. We had a 90% pass completion rate. I’d say that at least half of the 10% of incomplete passes came from Taniguchi during his time in midfield. This was perfectly summed up by the pass he attempted just before he was taken off, which was a lofted through pass for an attacker to run onto which only just was able to bounce before it left the pitch about 5 metres ahead of the run of the player. It also felt that other players were trying not to pass to him in order not to ruin his confidence. Oniki, leave him at the back please! He’s good there! Oh and a quick mention of the fact that we scored loads of goals and Tachibanada got a hatttrick! Blimey! He’s 4 goals behind Olunga in the scoring charts having played three less games. Come on Kento and make a push for the golden boot! Aside from his three we had a couple from Mitoma, a beautiful one from Oshima, one from Damiao and one from Wakizaka. Nice work guys!

Next up we have United City again. It’s another 11pm kick off and it’s on Monday night. I would imagine we’ll get the other starting line up for that game. Or maybe Oniki will go with a composite based around Taniguchi in midfield and Hatate in goal. The game after is against Daegu so if we win the next two Oniki would be free to do anything he wanted in the final group game knowing we had won the group. Could be exciting. But might be just the same thing again. I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But at the same time, it might be worth trying to keep some players injury free as we’ll have a couple of games within a week of us returning from Uzbekistan before we take a one month break. Go Frontale!
