New players, part 4: Ao Tanaka & Akihiro Ienaga

Part 4 of my pre-season new player round up. Once again, most information is swiped from Wikipedia and the photos swiped from the Frontale website. Sorry!

Ao Tanaka

Squad number - 32
Position - Midfielder

D.O.B. - 10th September 1998

Height - 1.78m

A product of the Frontale youth system (where he was captain), Ao has been playing for Frontale for years (since 2007) and started his time at Frontale in the stands supporting the team. A local lad, he has been widely tipped to be a future captain of the team. Flirted with the first team last year and made it into the squad a couple of times. This years extra fixtures could see him making more inroads. Went to the Emperor's Cup final in Osaka as a fan which I am sure has endeared him to the supporters!

Akihiro Ienaga

Squad number - 41
Position - Attacking midfielder
D.O.B. -
13th June 1986
Height - 1.73m

Hugely experienced player we signed from Omiya Ardija. Started his career at Gamba Osaka before moving to Oita Trinita and Cerezo Osaka and then moving to Spain and spending three seasons at RCD Mallorca. Scored two goals for them in 14 appearances in his first season but barely got a look in the two seasons after. Then moved to Korea and played for Ulsan Hyundai for a year before returning to Gamba for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Didn't play much for them that time around though and moved on to Omiya Ardija in 2014. At Omiya, he played 92 times in three seasons scoring 28 goals. He made it into the J League team of the year last year, was Omiya's top scorer and it seems that their fans weren't too happy to lose him. But, guess he didn't want to play with the whinging Yokotani anymore, so he came to us! Has made a handful of appearances for Japan at various levels over the years but nothing recently.

New players, part 3: Michael James Fitzgerald & William Popp

Part 3 of my pre-season new player round up. Once again, most information is swiped from Wikipedia and the photos swiped from the Frontale website. Sorry!

Michael James Fitzgerald

Squad number - 29
Position - Defender

D.O.B. -
17th September 1998
Height -1.85m

Signed from Albirex Niigata, Michael James Fitzgerald was born and raised in New Zealand (who he has represented at international level three times) but is now a Japanese citizen (since 2013). He started his Japanese football career at Seiritsu Gakuen High School and then joined Albirex in 2008. During his time there he had a couple of loan spells at Zweigen Kanazawa and V-Varen Nagasaki before establishing himself as a semi-regular starter in the Albirex team. In 2016 he played for them 22 times and scored his first goal. Given that they almost went down last year, I hope he played in the games when they defended well and was absent for the big defeats. Seems to play in central defence which would make sense given his height. The name on his shirt will be 'Michael', he seems to be referred to online mostly as Michael James, but his surname actually seems to be Fitzgerald, so who knows what I'll be calling him for the rest of the season.

William Popp

Squad number - 31
Position - Goalkeeper
D.O.B. - 21st October 1994

Height - 1.91m

Our new (probably 4th choice, I guess) goalkeeper. William Popp was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and American father. We signed him from Tokyo Verdy, where he came through the youth system, but he only seems to have played for them once. Last season he went to FC Gifu on loan and only played a handful of games there too, so he's still young and inexperienced, but maybe this is the kind of player we want as our 4th choice keeper. Someone who can improve from working with the keepers we have. Not sure he'll see much first team action this year, but good luck to him!

New players, part 2: Rhayner & Jefferson Tabinas

Part 2 of my pre-season new player round up. Once again, most information is swiped from Wikipedia and the photos swiped from the Frontale website. Sorry!

Rhayner

Squad number - 22
Position - Forward
D.O.B. -5th September 1990
Height -1.79m

As with all Brazilian signings, Rhayner automatically has generated a bit of excitement. He's a striker. He's a Brazilian. That's about all it takes. He signed from Ponte Preta a Brazilian top flight team where he didn't exactly have a great season. He featured in 23 games but only scored a couple of goals, but the previous season at Vitoria in the second tier he managed six goals from 16 games which is a bit more encouraging. Judging from a video of his highlights on youtube, he seems to be more of a provider than a goal scorer, has good ball control and dribbling and looks pretty fast. Just wait till the season starts and everything I have said turns out to be completely wrong! Guess this is a case of let's wait and see really.

Jefferson Tabinas

Squad number - 26
Position - Defender
D.O.B. -7th August 1998
Height -1.82m

Jefferson Tabinas, or Jeff as he will be called, is potentially a huge addition to our squad. Seems like a big character, with plenty of enthusiasm and confidence. He reportedly had six or seven clubs after him but he chose to sign for us from Toko Gakuen High School. Born in Japan to a Filipina mother and a Ghanaian father, he is a citizen of the Philippines but wants to get Japanese citizenship in time to represent Japan at the Tokyo Olympics. Equally at home in central defence or at left back he has said that he will play anywhere he is required (or words to that effect). Captain of his school team, it seems that he and Ao might be battling it out for the captain's armband for Frontale in the future. At least if we can hang on to him for long enough. Hope he gets enough game time to keep him satisfied as it feels like he could be a real prospect for the future.

New players, part 1: Hiroyuki Abe & Kei Chinen

This is the first of four posts on our new players this season. A few of the names will be more familiar as some of the younger signings were announced last year. I'm also including Ao Tanaka as a new player, as although he had a squad number last year, this really feels like his first season as previously he hasn't really seen any action. I'll be posting them in ascending squad number order and trying to include any useful info that you might need (mostly swiped from Wikipedia). Pictures also swiped from the Frontale website page. Hope they don't mind... First, Hiroyuki Abe and Kei Chinen.

Hiroyuki Abe

Squad number - 8
Position - Attacking midfielder
D.O.B. - July 5th 1989
Height - 1.70m

Abe was one of the first signings announced this year and as seems to be the way with most players in our squad, is an attacking midfielder. Before coming to us he was a one club man, spending his whole career at Gamba Osaka. In his time at Gamba he made 133 J League appearances scoring 21 times. He played 24 times in the league last season so it doesn't seem that he has moved to us because he wasn't getting to play at Gamba. Seems like he's quite an interesting character, stating already that he's scared of Kanto (I presume he was at least half joking...).

Kei Chinen

Squad number - 20
Position - Forward
D.O.B. - 17th March 1995
Height - 1.77m

This one's going to be a bit more difficult as he doesn't have a wikipedia page... Chinen is originally from Okinawa but we signed him from Aichi Gakuin University. Very much one for the future, it's nice that we have a bit more depth in the forward department as we usually seem to play midfielders up there. He wasn't a particularly well known player but our scout thinks he has potential, so sounds promising!

2017 squad numbers

After this afternoon's new season announcement ceremony (not really sure what to call it exactly), we now know the squad numbers for the new season. Also revealed for the first time were the new kits (not exactly sure what I think about them yet to be honest). As I keep promising, I will write something about all of the new additions to the squad soon, but before that, here's the squad numbers. We have a few more players than we did last season. Understandable I guess, as we have to deal with some extra games this year (the ACL ones. New kit for those games revealed too). Notable number changes are Kurumaya taking the number 7 shirt and Miyoshi taking over Okubo's number 13. Ienaga, one of the new boys has pushed the limits of our usual numbering system taking his usual number 41.

One other thing that I haven't mentioned yet is that we have a new captain. Kobayashi is now taking the armband with the back up captains (or whatever they are called...) being Taniguchi, Oshima and Sung-Ryong.

2016 Season Player Round-Up Part 3

This is the final part of my end of season player round up, featuring squad numbers 21-32 and our departing manager. After this post I'll write something about the new additions to our squad (probably after the pre-season presentation/party thing that's happening in a week or so. Hopefully by then I will be able to use two hands to type again, as recently writing these things has been a bit of an effort! If anyone else departs, I'll update these posts with the info.

21 Eduardo Neto
Took a little while to adjust to our game but once he had, he became a very important player for us. I remember, in his first few games his passes were hit so fast and hard that no-one could cope with them. It was quite amusing. Kengo said he was our most important player and after that everyone loved him. His form dropped a little at the end of the season (as did most people’s) but he seems to enjoy playing for us and like he really cares. Excited to see how he does next year with a full pre-season behind him.

22 Nakano Yoshihiro
Unfairly criticized by some of the fans I feel. Hasn’t really had much of a chance this year as we haven’t really been playing a system that he fits into very well. Seems like his confidence was unsurprisingly low, probably because of the grief he was getting from Okubo and some of the fans. Much better going forward than defending. Suspect that he might be leaving us next year and feel sorry for him. Maybe going out on loan for a bit might help. Or maybe the absence of Yoshito and playing a system that suits him would also do the job. [Going on loan to Vegalta Sendai for the 2017 season. Good luck to him!]

23 Eduardo
Another player who really cares. Would love to see us keep him for next year, although apparently Kashiwa are quite keen to have him back. Like the other Brazilians though, he apparently wants to stay with us. Prone to the odd slip up, sometimes trying to do something a bit ambitious and losing the ball, but he’s saved us more times than he has let us down and it must be a tough job being a defender in such an attacking team. He’s also been thrown up front at the end of games and scored a few goals which is nice. Showed real guts to step up and take a penalty in the shoot out against Urawa. And still pretty young so should be improving all the time. [Signed for us permanently. Great news!]

24 Ando Shunsuke
Difficult to say much about him as he has hardly played. In the few games he had a chance he looked fairly solid, but you’d probably still put him down as our third choice keeper which is a pretty low action position to be in. Has come through the youth system so obviously has an attachment to the club, but I suspect if he wants to play regular football it might have to be elsewhere as I can’t see him dislodging Sung-Ryong or Shota.

25 Kano Kenta
Strange season for him. He started as a first choice player and then kind of drifted out of the picture. Played up front in the Nabisco cup and did a good job but hasn’t had many opportunities really. Might want to see what his chances are like under a new manager and with Okubo gone, but I suspect he might move on to get more time on the pitch.

26 Miyoshi Koji
One of my favourite players and had a big season. Scored his first goals for us, got sent off shortly after coming on against Sagan Tosu away, received a load of abuse from Okubo, won the U19 AFC Championship with Japan and always gave 100%. Will be crucial next season. Exciting player to watch as he always wants to run at players and shoot.

27 Otsuka Shohei
Another mixed season. At the start seemed nowhere near the team and a strange signing. Then after a decent Nabisco cup performance became a starter and played quite a few games. Seemed a little low on confidence at times but when he played he was all over the pitch, seemingly with instructions to go nuts for 60 mins and then get substituted. Played some great games for us and then disappeared from the starting line up and the bench. No idea what happened. Despite never really smiling in photos he is apparently a ‘mood-maker’ in the squad. Bit of a mystery as to what will happen with him next season.

28 Itakura Ko
Another U19 champion. Made the bench a few times early on in the season, but seemed to be one for the future. And then like Hasegawa suddenly became a crucial player right at the end of the league campaign. Primarily a central defender but was playing in the midfield and did a really good job. Will probably be seeing a lot more of him next year.

29 Takagi Shun
Feel a bit sorry for him. Our fourth choice keeper but brought on against Yokohama and conceded two late goals in a match we almost lost. I don’t think he could be blamed for either really and he did a fairly good job in that game. Started the next game away at Kobe and we all know what happened there. Was blamed by many for that result and whilst I think there were other players at fault, he could have done a bit better. He will have trouble pushing his way up the goalie pecking order I think.
[Has left the club and signed for Oita Trinita. Good luck to him]

30 Arai Shota
Like many others he had a mixed season. Had some storming games, away at Gamba after Sung-Ryong’s injury and away at Kashima. But also had a few stinkers, maybe most significantly the game at home against Gamba where we could have won the second stage. Think he is pretty solidly in our second choice keeper spot so hopefully he’s ok with that.

31 Tanaka Ao
32 Duke Carlos
Not much to say about these guys as neither of them made it onto the pitch. Duke Carlos made it on to the bench a few times, but guess they both are very much in the category of players for the future. Kazama must have some confidence in them as both were given squad numbers and they are both midfielders which is definitely our most crowded department.

Manager: Kazama Yahiro
Difficult to sum up his season. It’s sometimes debatable how much effect a manager can have, especially during the game. Has to be praised for getting us playing the way we are. Our style, whilst not being the most solid at the back and nerve-wracking at times, is great to watch. I hope Oniki will continue in the same way. Some of his substitutions seemed a bit weird at times and I don’t think he ever really knew his best starting line-up. We were thumped by injuries this season, so who knows what might have happened if he hadn’t had to deal with that. Possibly a good time for him to move on as maybe he has taken us as far as he can, but I think he will be remembered fondly.
[Managing Nagoya in J2 next year. Good luck to him.]

2016 Season Player Round-Up Part 2

Part two of my player round up, with a few new bits of information added that I found out about after I initially wrote this. Part 3 to follow soon, and I'll also try to write something about the new players who are joining us (so far Ienaga, Fitzgerald and Abe).

11 Kobayashi Yu
Delighted he’s staying with us and turning down what would have been big money elsewhere. I love Kobayashi as he always gives 100% effort. He may not put away as many chances as you might hope he would, but he is a player who is creating chances, unlike Okubo recently. He’s going to be very important next year with Okubo gone and I hope he can stay injury free and push on for us and for the national team too. If he hadn’t got injured at Kashima who knows what might have happened in the Championship. It’s telling that he finished level with Okubo on 15 goals even though Okubo took penalties and played significantly more minutes than him.

12 Supporters
Think we had a fairly decent season aside from a few people’s bad behaviour at Omiya. Really don’t need that kind of thing at our club. The number of people going to away games has been pretty impressive I think and we’ve had quite a few sell outs at home. Long may that continue!

13 Okubo Yoshito
Hmmm, the most difficult one of these to write, as my instincts say to give him a right slagging off, but he has been a very important player for us in the past. This year seemed to be one year too long for Okubo. He definitely seemed to have lost his enthusiasm for playing for us. There were some complaints from him earlier in the season about us not playing the correct way for him. This was apparently changed but it didn’t have much of an effect. Him dropping back into midfield at the end of the season suggested to me that he didn’t really think he could score anymore. Our opposition must have been confused to see him starting in midfield with a couple of youngsters leading the line. I guess we were too, but I think it’s a good time for him to leave us. I was often irked by the way that he seemed to be unsubstitutable and always in the starting line up, despite often not deserving either status. I really don’t like the way he moaned at the younger players and felt that he was using them as scapegoats and he was often equally at fault. His sending off at Omiya was totally stupid and was another nail in the coffin of our season. And finally his announcement of his transfer to FC Tokyo really early, before the season was finished was pretty bizarre too. Did an ok job in the last few Emperor’s Cup games, but it was pretty much the same story as with the whole season. Just missing something. All in all, I’m pleased he’s going as I think we can do better without him, but I thank him for all his efforts and wish him luck (except when he plays us…).

14 Nakamura Kengo
I guess he must be the player of the season. He has really turned back the clock this year and was playing some of his best football ever. I really hope he can continue it into next season. We really missed him when he was absent due to injury. If he’d played at Fukuoka maybe we would have won the first stage. He’s always 100% committed and he’s a real asset and a real credit to our club. Really hope we can give him an opportunity to lift Frontale’s first title soon as he really deserves it.

15 Harakawa Riki
Hasn’t really had a chance. Is still playing for the national U23s so I guess he is valued by their coach but I really feel he hasn’t had a fair crack of the whip this year. Would totally understand if he felt he needs to move on to get a chance of playing, but would like to see him have that chance with us. Just can’t see how that would happen with the players he has ahead of him. Perhaps Kengo’s good form has limited his opportunities. I guess he needs to decide if he’s prepared to wait a while or he wants his chance now. [He’s now moving to Sagan Tosu on loan next season. Good luck to him]

16 Hasegawa Tatsuya
Seemed to always be on the fringes of the squad but at the end of the season suddenly became a starter. The attacking duo of him and Miyoshi looked really dangerous in the couple of games they played together and if he hadn’t got injured in the Championship game against Kashima who knows what might have happened. Hoping he gets a chance next season as he is an exciting player to watch.

17 Takeoka Yuto
Another player whose season’s opportunities were limited by injury. Played well enough when he had the chance, but not sure if he would be a starting member with a fully fit squad. A very useful player to have on the bench, although not sure how excited he might be about that.

18 Elsinho
Another very important player this season. Again, someone who always gives 100% effort and a crucial attacking threat for us. Interested to see what happens if he keeps growing his hair as it has recently got pretty wild. Rarely makes mistakes and often creates or scores goals. Really hope he is with us next season. [He will be, and is now a permanent Frontale player, rather than being on loan. Great!]

19 Moriya Kentaro
In or around the team all year and has scored some crucial goals (Urawa away particularly). Feel that sometimes he plays better as a sub rather than when he starts. Probably has some work to do to become a regular starter and like other midfielders is a little bit hindered by the players ahead of him in the pecking order.

20 Kurumaya Shintaro
Was on fire earlier in the season with his assists and then went off the boil a little. Strangely, since he was moved from defence into midfield somehow seems to get forward less, but maybe this was fatigue from a long season. Would say he deserves his position as a regular starter though. Still fairly young so should still be improving and will be an important player next year.

2016 Season Player Round-Up Part 1

This the first of three parts, where I give my thoughts on how people did this season. I wrote these before our last few Emperor's Cup games, but most of it still stands I think and I'll add notes where things don't make sense. So, here you are, squad numbers 1-10. Parts 2 and 3 to follow soon.

1 Sung-Ryong Jung
Had a decent enough first season I think. We missed him when he wasn’t available and he did seem to give us a bit more stability at the back. Feel like he punches a bit too much when it seems to make more sense to catch the ball, but that does seem characteristic of J League keepers in general. Seems like a nice guy and am pleased that we have him.

2 Noborizato Kyohei
Up and down season due, mainly I guess, to injuries. Definitely gives us some drive going forwards and has been used well as a sub in quite a few games. Kind of wish he’d live up to his song and ‘get goal’ a bit more often (more often than not at all this season…). Always seems 100% committed and that’s hugely in his favour. Another nice guy, I think, like most of the squad.

3 Nara Tatsuki
Poor Nara! A season blighted by injury. The first few games things looked a little shaky but he was coming in to some good form when he got his first serious injury. Similarly bad timing for the second injury, just after he’d come back from the first one. Hope he can recover fully and if he does I’m sure he’ll be a very important player for us in the future. Maybe his presence over the course of the season might have given us the little bit extra we needed, but guess we’ll never know.

4 Igawa Yusuke
Was a little worried when he came in during our massive defensive crisis but he did a surprisingly good job. His pace is a bit of a concern, but of course he’s not the youngest anymore so you can’t expect as much as previously. Was a more than adequate stand in when we needed him and I think he can probably play the same role next season if he wants. His form was maybe starting to drop when he got injured, but have to praise him for getting us out of a very tricky spot.

5 Taniguchi Shogo
Hugely improved this year, and although he apparently would rather play in a central midfield position, I think he’s actually better at the back at the moment. Had some dodgy games when he was asked to play on the wing, but I’d say that’s more the fault of the manager than him as it really isn’t his position. Gave us some much needed stability at there back when things were wobbling. Still prone to the occasional lapse in concentration, but think he did a good job this year and that he’s an important player for us going forward. And still improving I think.

6 Tasaka Yusuke
I don’t think at the start of the season anyone could have imagined he would end up being an important part of our defence, but his transformation from attacker to defender has been pretty successful I think. I think he’s done really well at the back for us. He is good on the ball and can beat players taking the ball out of defence which is something a little different for us. Not sure if the transformation is a long term thing, but he’s definitely an important player for us and one who has done well this season.

7 Hashimoto Koji
Big friend of Okubo apparently. I like Hashimoto and don’t really feel like he’s been given the best opportunities this season, but he does seem to be suited to playing on the wing and we haven’t really been playing that kind of way recently. I remember he was doing well there at Iwata and was then substituted. Suspect that if he wants to play regular football he might have to leave us, but with a new manager next season, maybe he’ll have more of a chance. [Leaving the club. No new club as of yet. Good luck to him]

8 Komiyama Takanobu
Unfortunate and serious injury at a bad time. We could definitely have done with him during one of our many injury crises this season. Was pleased to see him make a come back late in the season, but to be honest this season was a bit of a write off for him. Another who would probably have to move to get regular playing time, but who I would be happy to keep as I think he is a useful player. [Leaving us for Yokohama FC. Good luck to him]

9 Morimoto Takayuki
Another player who picked up a big injury. I sense a pattern developing. At the start of the season I felt like he was just getting going when he got injured. After his come back, he did some useful things for us but maybe didn’t quite make the impact we might have hoped for. Hopefully he can start next season fit and ready to go as he’ll be very important for us next year and will almost certainly be used much more than he was this year.

10 Oshima Ryota
A mixed season. We certainly missed him when he was away on international duty and his presence in the middle of the field is a great asset. He had a few stinkers at the end of the season though (Kobe away particularly). Will be crucially important next year and he’s a young player who is still improving. His energy and tackling is really useful. His passing was letting him down in the last few league games, but he’s had a long season, so hopefully with a bit of a rest he’ll be back and firing next year. I wish he’d shoot a bit more often, as that is one of his strengths I think.

Vs Kashima Antlers 1/1/17 - Emperor's Cup Final

Kashima Antlers 2 - 1 Kawasaki Frontale (AET)

Another short post. Hand still injured so typing is slow and difficult, stream of the game cut out a lot so difficult to make any real judgements on the game, enthusiasm low… Season is now finished, goodbye to Okubo and Kazama and probably some others. Guess the real transfer business starts now. From my limited viewing of the game, feel like we put up a decent fight against a Kashima team who know how to win titles and were once again very physical and fouly. I’ll add the highlights when they are up and I have a long post summing up individual players’ performances this season, so they’ll be some more on here soon. But until then we can feel disappointed but hopefully inspired that we can push on next season and change some of these second places into firsts and pick up our first ever trophy.

Highlights

No handy highlights package for this game that no Frontale fan probably ever wants to see again. The only decent quality video I could find is this 3 hour monstrosity to relive the whole horrible game in full. Can't imagine I'll be watching it, but if you're feeling masochistic, be my guest.

Vs Omiya Ardija 29/12/16 - Emperor's Cup Semi Final

  Omiya Ardija 0 - 1 Kawasaki Frontale

Sorry, this post is late and tiny. I am traveling, so didn’t see the game. Also, due to a bit of clumsiness, I have rendered myself one-handed for a few weeks, so typing even this is taking a very long time. But anyway, a great result, bit of revenge against Omiya and on to the final in Osaka against Kashima. Let’s hope we can make up for our bad performance against them in the play offs. From the highlights below it looked a pretty even game, but we’re through. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
